The Manila International film festival (MIFF) has unveiled its highly anticipated 2026 lineup, with DreamWorks Animation’s ‘Forgotten Island’ taking center stage. This animated adventure, inspired by Philippine mythology will have its world premiere at the festival, three weeks ahead of its September 25 theatrical release in the US.
The festival, now in its third year, will take place from September 3 to 6 at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre and The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. MIFF promises a vibrant celebration of Filipino cinema, featuring a diverse range of films, from major studio productions to independent gems and thought-provoking documentaries.
The ‘Forgotten Island’ Premiere and Star-Studded Cast
‘Forgotten Island’ directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, follows the journey of lifelong friends Jo and Raissa, voiced by Grammy and Academy Award winner H.E.R. and Filipino American actress Liza Soberano. The film transports the duo to the mystical island of Nakalimutan, where they encounter magical and mythological creatures. Their quest to return home becomes increasingly urgent as they learn that escaping the island may cost them their cherished memories.
The voice cast also includes a powerhouse ensemble of Filipino talent, such as Lea SalongaManny JacintoDolly de Leon and Jo Koy alongside international stars like Dave Franco and Jenny Slate. Salonga, who voices the Dreaded Manananggal, will receive the MIFF Icon Award during the closing-night gala on September 6.
Honoring Lea Salonga: A Retrospective
In addition to her role in ‘Forgotten Island’ Lea Salonga will be celebrated with a special retrospective. The festival will screen two of her notable works: the 1995 romance ‘Sana Maulit Muli’ and the 2026 short ‘The Vale: Origins’. This tribute underscores Salonga’s enduring impact on both Filipino and international cinema.
MIFF has also announced that Salonga will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame later this year, making her the first Filipina to achieve this honor in the Live Theatre/Live Performance category. This recognition highlights her contributions to the entertainment industry and her status as a cultural icon.
World and Hollywood Premieres
The festival’s lineup includes a mix of world and Hollywood premieres, showcasing the richness and diversity of Filipino filmmaking. Among the world premieres is ‘Eddie Romero Remastered: A Century of Filipino Cinema’ a documentary directed by Chuck Gutierrez and Baby Ruth Villarama. This film explores the life and career of the late National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, Eddie Romero, whose work has influenced generations of filmmakers.
Another notable world premiere is ‘Kappa-Tiran’ a fraternity thriller directed by Neal ‘Buboy’ Tan. This film delves into the controversial practice of hazing within fraternities and sororities, featuring a cast that includes Ejay Falcon, Sheryl Cruz, and Aljur Abrenica.
The Hollywood premieres include ‘Quezon’ directed by Jerrold Tarog and starring Jericho Rosales. This historical drama follows the rise of Manuel L. Quezon to the presidency of the Philippine Commonwealth. Other Hollywood premieres include the comedy ‘No Room for Love’ and the documentary ‘Along Comes Larry: The Larry Ramos Story’.
Special Screenings and Documentaries
MIFF will also feature special screenings and documentaries that address significant historical and cultural themes. One such film is ’58th’ an animated documentary about the 2009 Maguindanao massacre. Directed by Carl Joseph Papa, this film tells the story through the family of photojournalist Reynaldo ‘Bebot’ Momay, whose remains were never recovered.
Another special presentation is a remastered edition of ‘Bebot: Generation One’ a music video by Patricio Ginelsa for the Black Eyed Peas, celebrating its 20th anniversary. This screening highlights the enduring influence of Filipino artists on global pop culture.
The festival will also screen ‘The Road to Sydney’ a documentary about Philippine dance master Sydney Loyola. This film follows Loyola’s journey from Palawan to the San Francisco Bay Area as she confronts professional and personal upheaval before returning to the Philippines.
MIFF Executive Producer Lisa Lew emphasized the festival’s commitment to showcasing the breadth of Filipino filmmaking, from major studio films to independent features and documentaries. Festival producer Winston Emano highlighted the unique opportunity for audiences to interact with filmmakers and cast members, gaining insights into the creative process behind the films.
Tickets and festival passes are now available, with early-bird tickets for the closing-night gala at The Beverly Hilton on September 6 available through August 16.
