During IndieWire’s Craft Roundtables, Quayle revealed his initial thought process: “I just was like, ‘Okay I need a creepy theme for Ed and his mother.’ And I’m hoping it’s going to be able to do some other things.” This theme was not only meant to be creepy but also versatile enough to adapt to various scenes throughout the series.

Crafting a Versatile Theme

Quayle’s approach to the theme was meticulous. He started with the creepy element, which he presented to Murphy. The theme’s adaptability became evident as Quayle reused and reinterpreted it for different key scenes, providing a throughline for the series. This included modifying the theme for a funeral scene and uplifting momentsensuring continuity in the narrative.

“Sure enough, I took it for a funeral scene and I made it sad, and I was like ‘Whew, it worked.’ It was dramatic,” Quayle shared. “Then, later on, I needed an uplifting version. I reharmonized it, a few major chords, and boom, it worked. So I kind of lucked out that the theme could do all those things.”

Collaboration with Fellow Composers

Quayle was not alone in his creative endeavor. He was joined by other esteemed TV composers at the roundtable, including Jeff Russo for Alien: EarthBrenton Vivian for The MadisonKris Bowers for Spider-NoirAmanda Jones for Murderbotand John Paesano for The Boroughs.
