The Rivals of Amziah King, directed by Andrew Patterson, made its debut at the SXSW festival in spring 2026 generating significant buzz as a potential awards contender and a triumphant return for Matthew McConaughey who had been absent from the screen for six years. The film, a unique fusion of bluegrass music and crime drama follows McConaughey as a singing beekeeper navigating the complex world of rural Oklahoma.
The film’s journey to the big screen was not without its challenges. Despite its initial acclaim, it took some time to find a distribution home and proved to be a harder sell for international audiences. Ultimately, producer and financier Black Bear decided to release the film themselves, marking one of the first releases for their new distribution arm.
The Rivals of Amziah King: A Modest but Respectable Opening
The film’s limited opening this past weekend, more than a year after its world premiere, was respectable but not the heralded summer sleeper many had hoped for. With just over $1 million at the domestic box office from 632 theaters The Rivals of Amziah King failed to crack the domestic Top 10 in a slower mid-August weekend. Its per-screen-average of $1,625 placed it behind other limited releases like the concert film Katseye: Wild Hearts and the Bollywood movie Vishwanath & Sons.
Despite its modest start, The Rivals of Amziah King is part of a growing portfolio for Black Bear’s new distribution arm, which has also released films like the Sydney Sweeney boxing biopic Christy and Daniel Roher’s Tuner. While Christy underperformed, Tuner has proven to be a pleasant surprise, benefiting from word of mouth and some light awards chatter.
Awards Potential and Unique Premise
The Rivals of Amziah King is unlikely to expand widely in its second weekend and will ultimately hit a similar screen count to what Tuner did in its run, never going above 500 theaters. The film will rely on critics and awards buzz to help it grow. While IndieWire’s review wasn’t glowing, the film has a strong Rotten Tomatoes score and a premise that certainly stands out.
The film’s unique premise makes it difficult to compare to other films. Perhaps the best comparison is to another Black Bear film, Wicker which follows a character played by Oscar winner Olivia Colman who falls in love with a man made of wicker. Wicker has been picking up its own grassroots buzz since its premiere at this year’s Sundance.
The Challenges of Upstart Distributors
Some growing pains are to be expected for upstart distributors like Black Bear, who are trying to find their audience in an unforgiving theatrical market. The Rivals of Amziah King isn’t a flop, but it seems like it’s going to take a bit longer to find its own audience.
The film stars a talented ensemble cast, including Angelina LookingGlassKurt RussellCole SprouseJake HorowitzScott ShepherdRob Morgan and Tony Revolori. It was written by James Montague and produced by Black BearHeyday Films and G.E.D Media.
The Rivals of Amziah King is a crime thriller with a phenomenal soundtrack set in the backwoods of rural Oklahoma. The film world premiered to a rare standing ovation at SXSW. Critics are calling it McConaughey’s career best as the head of a small-town honey-producing operation and leader of a band that frequently erupts into bluegrass musical numbers.
