The FBI has unveiled a multi-state operation that successfully thwarted a dramatic plot targeting the high-profile UFC event held at the White House on Sunday. The event, which celebrated President Donald Trump‘s 80th birthday, drew an estimated 4,300 attendees to the South Lawn, with an additional 85,000 watching at a nearby fan zone. The FBI’s swift action prevented what could have been a catastrophic incident.
The plot, which involved the use of explosive-laden drones and coordinated attacks, was uncovered through the efforts of the FBI and its law enforcement partners. The alleged plotters had discussed their plans in encrypted messages, which were intercepted by authorities. The FBI’s Director, Kash Patel, confirmed the arrests of multiple suspects involved in the plot.
The Unfolding of the Plot
The investigation began when the mother of Tycen Proper, a 19-year-old Ohio resident, contacted local authorities with concerns about her son’s recent behavior. Proper had made large firearms purchases and was communicating with a group online that expressed ultra-religious and anti-government sentiments. The group, which called itself the Vanguard of the Oldhad been discussing plans to attack the White House event since March 2026.
Proper admitted to participating in the planning of the attack during an FBI interview. The group’s communications, which moved from TikTok to the encrypted messaging app Signal, revealed detailed plans to use drones to detonate explosives over the north side of the White House. The goal was to force the crowd and high-value targets to evacuate into the line of fire of waiting snipers, effectively jumpstarting a revolution.
The Arrests and Ongoing Investigation
Five individuals have been arrested in connection with the plot, with authorities still pursuing other suspects. The arrests were made in multiple states, including Ohio, Missouri, and California. Proper, who is charged with conspiracy to commit an offense against the US and attempted murder of a federal officer, is currently in custody.
The Secret Service, which worked closely with the FBI throughout the investigation, has described the threat as serious. While the investigation remains active, the Secret Service Director Sean Curran has assured the public that formal comments regarding the specifics of the case will be made available in court filings.
The White House Event and Political Context
The UFC event at the White House was part of the celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary. The event featured 14 mixed martial arts fighters competing in back-to-back fights and was attended by some members of Trump’s administration and celebrities. The plot comes amidst a series of political violence incidents, including a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April and an assassination attempt on Trump in 2026.
President Trump, who was present at the event, has stated that he was unaware of the plot. Vice President JD Vance, however, acknowledged the significance of the threat, stating that the FBI’s decision to inform the public was due to the scale of the planned attack.
The FBI’s swift action in thwarting this plot highlights the ongoing efforts to protect high-profile events and maintain national security. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to ensure that all those involved are brought to justice.
