With countless titles spread across multiple platforms, the process of content discovery has become a significant pain point for many viewers. Enter Project Neo, an experimental AI agent developed by Indian hardware startup Lumio, which aims to streamline this experience by integrating with apps we use every day.
By connecting directly to Google TV through WhatsApp and Instagram, Project Neo promises to eliminate the friction typically associated with finding and watching content. After a week of using this AI chatbot to guide my evening viewing habits, I am convinced that this approach could be the future of smart TV ecosystems.
Revolutionizing Content Discovery
The primary issue with modern smart TV platforms is their ineffective content discovery mechanisms. These systems often rely on genre-based categorization, which lacks the nuance needed to understand the complex relationships between different types of content. For instance, a masterful horror movie like Midsommar might have more in common with the British classic The Wicker Man than with the latest schlock horror on Netflix.
Streaming interfaces are designed to maximize engagement time, often overwhelming users with dense grids of promotional tiles, auto-playing trailers, and multiple menus. This approach ignores the fact that content discovery increasingly happens on smartphones, through forums like Reddit and social platforms like Instagram. The challenge lies in translating this mobile discovery process to the big screen.
Seamless Integration with Everyday Apps
Project Neo addresses this challenge by moving the discovery process back to the smartphone, utilizing interfaces that users already know how to use. The system relies on a companion app called TLDR, which runs on the television. Users follow a standard QR code-based pairing process to connect a WhatsApp chatbot to their account. This integration allows users to chat directly with the bot using both text and voice input, effectively turning the smartphone into a conversational input device for the television.
The beauty of this integration lies in its simplicity. Users don’t need a new app on their phone; Project Neo brings the input to where they already are. There’s no need for casting or switching between screens. Users can simply enter the name of the content they want to watch, and TLDR will pull it up on the screen. If the user is signed into the service, the content will start playing immediately. If not, the system will inform the user which service the content is available on, along with detailed metadata including posters, banner images, and a short summary.
Advanced Recommendation Engine
Beyond its basic functionality, Project Neo offers a full-blown recommendation engine powered by AI. During testing, I asked the bot for recommendations similar to the classic epic adventure Lawrence of Arabia and it provided spot-on suggestions like Ben-Hur and The Last Emperor. The experience of using Project Neo is incredibly fluid. Users can talk to the bot exactly as they would to a friend, thanks to its support for slang and abbreviated communication.
For example, users can ask the bot to pull up trending movies or something as specific as a non-obvious, neo-noir crime thriller from the ’90s with high ratings and featuring at least one Oscar-nominated actor. The bot can also handle additional queries, such as filtering out movies longer than 90 minutes. The system even supports voice notes, making it even more convenient to use. While the current implementation lacks the ability to drop users into an ongoing sports match, it does display title cards with game highlights.
