In the ever-evolving landscape of indie filmmaking, the path to success is often unclear. While some advocate for the festival circuit and others for social media platforms, Valley Daze offers a compelling alternative: community-driven filmmaking.
This independent TV pilot, filmed in 2026 with a modest budget of $30,000weaves a tale reminiscent of Clerksfollowing a diverse group of skaters, dealers, influencers, artists, and wallflowers through a week of chaotic youth in the San Fernando Valley. What sets Valley Daze apart is its authentic portrayal of the Valley’s unique culturecrafted by those who know it best.
The Power of Community in Filmmaking
Valley Daze is a testament to the power of community. The project is a collaboration between 100 Los Angeles locals who met at various high schools around the Valley. Through a crowdfunding campaign, they pooled their resources to create a comedy that reflects the quirks of their neighborhoods.
The community-first ethos extends to the film’s distribution strategy. Instead of pursuing festivals or online platforms, Valley Daze has focused on packed local screenings around the Valley. This unique approach caught the attention of the Los Angeles City Councilwhich hosted a sold-out screening on Friday, June 19, 2026at the El Portal Theater.
A City Council’s Endorsement
The screening was spearheaded by Los Angeles City Councilmember Adrin Nazarianwho represents the East San Fernando Valley in Council District 2. Nazarian saw Valley Daze as an opportunity to highlight the importance of supporting small filmmakers in their early careers.
“I was so impressed by the crew from Valley Daze” Nazarian said. “These people for the most part are all Valley-based, Valley-grown. There was a common bond between each one of them across the school boundaries. They came together in their early 20s and made something really amazing.”
He continued, “Where does a giant, almond-producing tree come from? It comes from one little seedling. When you give that chance, when you nurture it, when you do all the things necessary to make that little seedling thrive, it’s going to do a lot more. And that’s something we should never lose sight of.”
The Future of Valley Daze
The future of Valley Daze remains uncertain, but the project’s creators are eager to explore further development. Whether it’s more episodes or a larger series, the support from the Valley community is undeniable.
On the night of the screening, the El Portal Theater was filled with Valley locals eager to show their support. Every independent filmmaker dreams of such a reception, and Valley Daze is a shining example of what can be achieved with community backing.
