Lorde Slams Spotify’s AI Feature for Misrepresenting Her Music

Lorde takes a stand against Spotify's AI-generated song descriptions, highlighting inaccuracies and calling for artist opt-out options.

Lorde Slams Spotify's AI Feature for Misrepresenting Her Music

In a bold move, Grammy-winning artist Lorde has publicly criticized Spotify‘s new AI-powered feature, About the Song. This tool, currently in beta, provides users with context and background information about tracks by scraping data from third-party sources. Lorde’s concerns highlight the growing tension between artists and AI technologies in the music industry.

The controversy began when Lorde shared a screenshot on her Instagram Stories earlier this month. The image revealed an inaccurate description of her song Current Affairs which was incorrectly linked to a specific performance during her Ultrasound World Tour. The AI-generated summary described a performance where Lorde strips down to underwear while a dancer pours water over her, a scene that actually corresponds to her song GRWM.

Lorde’s Public Criticism and Spotify’s Response

Lorde expressed her frustration in a series of Instagram Stories, stating, Hey Spotify, I’m gonna go out on a limb [and] say we don’t want this. She further elaborated, Not only is this inaccurate (not the song I did that in) but reducing a song to an AI generated meaning right at the source feels like it limits free interpretation. Lorde’s critique underscores the broader debate about the role of AI in interpreting and representing artistic works.

In response to Lorde’s criticism, Spotify swiftly removed the inaccurate text. A spokesperson for the streaming giant told PitchforkWe built ‘About the Song’ because fans want to dig into the stories behind the music. It’s still in beta. The info comes from articles across the internet, and when something’s off, we move fast to fix it, like we did here. Getting it right matters to us. This incident has sparked discussions about the reliability and accuracy of AI-generated content in the music industry.

Lorde’s Broader Stance Against AI

Lorde’s criticism of Spotify’s AI feature is part of a broader stance against the encroachment of AI technologies. Earlier this month, during a performance at Madrid’s Mad Cool Festival she advised her audience to steer clear of Meta’s new AI glasses stating, Increasingly, in our world, it gets harder and harder to know what is real. She added, Can I just say, for the record, fuck the glasses. Don’t get the glasses. Not sexy. This statement reflects a growing concern among artists about the impact of AI on creativity and authenticity.

The debate over AI in the music industry extends beyond Lorde. Other artists, such as SZA have also expressed their concerns. In an interview with I-D earlier this year, SZA mentioned feeling at war because of AI highlighting the challenges artists face in maintaining their creative integrity in an increasingly digital world.

The Challenges of AI-Generated Content

The issues raised by Lorde and other artists reflect the broader challenges of AI-generated content. Companies like Google have faced similar criticism for their AI summaries, which often pull data from a wide range of sources, including social media posts and news articles. This approach, while intended to provide comprehensive information, can lead to inaccuracies and misrepresentations.

As AI technologies continue to evolve, the music industry is grappling with how to balance innovation with the need to respect artistic intent. Lorde’s criticism serves as a reminder of the importance of accuracy and the potential impact of AI on the creative process. It also highlights the need for platforms like Spotify to provide artists with more control over how their work is presented and interpreted.
