Netflix and AMC Global Media Strike $500 Million Walking Dead Streaming Agreement

Netflix has struck a monumental $500 million deal with AMC Global Media for global streaming rights to The Walking Dead Universe, ensuring the franchise's continued dominance in the streaming landscape.

Netflix and AMC Global Media Strike $500 Million Walking Dead Streaming Agreement

The streaming wars have reached a new milestone with Netflix’s recent acquisition of global streaming rights to The Walking Dead Universe. In a landmark deal worth $500 million, Netflix has secured the rights to stream all episodes of the original series and its six spin-offs for the next five years. This agreement not only solidifies Netflix’s position as a leader in streaming but also ensures that fans worldwide can continue to enjoy the gripping narratives of the zombie apocalypse.

The deal, announced alongside AMC Global Media’s second-quarter earnings, is a co-exclusive agreement. This means that while Netflix will stream the series in the U.S. and expand its reach to new territories like the U.K., Italy, Australia, and New Zealand, AMC+ will also get the original series for the first time in 2027. This strategic move aims to create a unified destination for the franchise, making it more accessible than ever to fans around the world.

The Walking Dead Universe: A Comprehensive Collection

The agreement covers an impressive 371 episodes across seven series: the original The Walking DeadFear the Walking DeadThe Walking Dead: Daryl DixonThe Walking Dead: Dead CityThe Walking Dead: The Ones Who LiveThe Walking Dead: World Beyond and Tales of The Walking Dead. This extensive collection ensures that both new and longtime fans can binge-watch the entire universe of the zombie apocalypse.

For Netflix, this deal comes at a crucial time as the platform faces heightened investor scrutiny over engagement metrics. While many of its original titles have seen ratings declines in their second seasons, Netflix remains a dominant force in the industry with industry-low churn rates and best-in-class technology. The acquisition of The Walking Dead Universe is a strategic move to bring new relevance to its library content, a phenomenon known as the Netflix effect.

A Historic Partnership and Financial Boost

The original series, which premiered on Halloween in 2010, has been a company-defining economic engine for AMC Global Media. Originally known as Rainbow Media, AMC spun off and had its IPO just a few months before the premiere of The Walking Dead. The show’s success has been instrumental in the network’s growth and has redefined its identity in the entertainment landscape.

The $500 million deal is expected to provide a significant financial boost to AMC Global Media. The company reported net revenues of $547 million for the second quarter, down 9 percent from a year ago. However, the deal has allowed AMC to raise its full-year guidance, thanks to the streaming agreement and other distribution deals with partners like YouTube and Comcast. Streaming now represents more than a third of the company’s domestic revenue, with platforms like AMC+, Acorn TV, and Shudder contributing to this growth.

Financial Implications and Future Prospects

The deal includes a cash payment of approximately $25 million this year, followed by annual cash payments of approximately $100 million from 2027 to 2030, with the remaining amount paid in 2031. AMC expects to recognize annual revenue related to the license agreement between $200 million to $225 million in each of 2026 and 2027. This financial injection is a testament to the enduring popularity and commercial success of The Walking Dead franchise.

Despite the financial challenges, including a 11% drop in U.S. ad sales and a 11% decline in domestic revenue, AMC Global Media remains optimistic about its future prospects. The company’s streaming portfolio, which includes AMC+, Acorn TV, Shudder, Sundance Now, ALLBLK, HIDIVE, and All Reality, continues to grow. Additionally, AMC’s linear networks, such as AMC, BBC AMERICA, IFC, SundanceTV, and We TV, along with its film distribution labels, contribute to its diverse revenue streams.

A New Era for The Walking Dead Franchise

The Walking Dead franchise has been a cultural phenomenon since its inception. The original series, which ran for 11 seasons, has captivated audiences worldwide with its intense storytelling and complex characters. The spin-offs have further expanded the universe, offering new perspectives and adventures within the same post-apocalyptic world.

With this new deal, Netflix aims to continue attracting new fans to the franchise. Lori Conkling, Vice President of Licensing at Netflix, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “Audiences have discovered and loved The Walking Dead on Netflix for nearly 15 years, and the show continues to attract new fans. We’re excited to partner with AMC Global Media to continue to expand that access to more audiences around the world and bring the entirety of The Walking Dead Universe to Netflix.”

Kristin Dolan, CEO of AMC Global Media, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the significance of the deal for both companies and fans. “This deal creates a global destination for this universe – all shows, all episodes – making the franchise more accessible than ever to fans around the world. In addition, the co-exclusive agreement allows us to bring the original series to AMC+ for the first time early next year. Netflix has been an important partner in making The Walking Dead one of the most successful franchises in the history of entertainment.”

As the streaming landscape continues to evolve, this landmark deal between Netflix and AMC Global Media ensures that The Walking Dead Universe will remain a cornerstone of entertainment for years to come. Fans can look forward to immersive storytelling, thrilling adventures, and the enduring legacy of one of the most beloved franchises in television history.
