In the realm of documentary filmmaking, few stories captivate the heart and imagination quite like The Cycle of Love. Directed by Orlando von Einsiedel this film chronicles the extraordinary journey of P.K. Mahanandia a Dalit sketch artist who embarked on a 6,000-mile bicycle odyssey from New Delhi to Sweden in 1977 to reunite with the love of his life, Lotta von Schedvin.
The film, which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and wowed audiences at Middleburg and other festivals, is a testament to the power of love and determination. Von Einsiedel’s inspiration for the film came from a chance encounter in Sweden, where two young people handed him a book and said, We know your work, and this is our parents’ story.
The Making of a Documentary Masterpiece
Von Einsiedel’s approach to filming was unique and innovative. He shot most of the documentary over seven weeks in India and Sweden, using India to stand in for more than a dozen locations along the hippie trail from New Delhi to Borås, Sweden. The skeleton crew braved the Himalayas, the desert in Rajasthan, and the jungle in Odisha to capture the essence of P.K.’s journey.
The filmmaker hired an actor, Chirag Lobo to play the young P.K., but shot the reenactments like a documentary, pitting the actor against real people in real time. Nothing is scripted said von Einsiedel. Everything is improvised, and all the other people we meet along the way, they’re communities of Afghans, Iranians, and Turks.
The Challenges of Theatrical Release
The journey to bring The Cycle of Love to theaters was not without its challenges. Despite the film’s success at festivals, the current market for documentaries is depressed. Docs have not had a robust acquisition market for a few years wrote one veteran distribution executive. However, the Telluride response gave the filmmakers the confidence to pursue a theatrical release.
Von Einsiedel, UK distributor Dogwoof and his producers took the time to raise enough funding to support a theatrical North American release via service distributor Variance Films. The movie is booked worldwide, with other openings following the U.S. release.
The Road to Oscar Recognition
The filmmakers have also hired established Oscar campaign veteran Chris Albert and 42West to push the film with documentary voters. If enough people see it, The Cycle of Love is a surefire Oscar contender.
This is a film which cuts across politics said von Einsiedel. I wanted to tell a positive, joyful story. I’ve spent a career making docs about what I believe are important, urgent issues, and always, that will exist as a reason to make documentaries. But why can’t docs be about happiness and joy? Love is something everybody can agree on. All you need is love.
The Cycle of Love opens in theaters on Friday, August 28 from Variance Films.
