Create a safe online environment for your kids with step-by-step guides to streaming profiles and ratings limits

Protecting kids online with streaming profiles and ratings limits

As a parent, it’s essential to ensure your kids are safe online, especially when it comes to streaming services. With the rise of streaming platforms it’s crucial to set up parental controls to limit access to inappropriate content. In this article, we’ll walk you through creating kids’ profiles, setting ratings limits, and using PINs across major platforms.

Creating Kids’ Profiles

Most streaming services offer the option to create kids’ profiles which allow you to restrict access to certain content based on your child’s age. For example, Netflix offers a range of profile options including a kids’ profile that limits access to content rated GPG or PG-13. To create a kids’ profile on Netflix, simply go to the account settings and select add profile.

Setting Ratings Limits

Once you’ve created a kids’ profile, you can set ratings limits to restrict access to certain content. For example, on Amazon Prime Video you can set ratings limits based on your child’s age, ensuring they only have access to content suitable for their age group. To set ratings limits on Amazon Prime Video, go to the parental controls section and select the ratings limit option.

Using PINs and Profile Locks

In addition to creating kids’ profiles and setting ratings limits, you can also use PINs and profile locks to add an extra layer of security. For example, on Hulu you can set a PIN to restrict access to certain content, and also use profile locks to prevent your child from accessing other profiles. To set a PIN on Hulu, go to the account settings and select parental controls.

Subtitle, Autoplay, and Profile Lock Settings

Other settings you may want to consider when setting up parental controls include subtitle options, autoplay settings, and profile lock options. For example, on Disney+ you can turn off autoplay to prevent your child from being exposed to unwanted content. To turn off autoplay on Disney+, go to the account settings and select autoplay options.

Printable Checklist

To help you get started, we’ve created a printable checklist for each major streaming service, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and Disney+. Simply print out the checklist and follow the steps to set up parental controls on each platform.
