The Film Independent Spirit Awards are set to undergo a significant transformation in 2027, reflecting the evolving landscape of independent filmmaking. With the introduction of new categories and expanded international recognition, the awards aim to celebrate a broader range of creative voices and platforms.
This expansion comes on the heels of a substantial $2.55 million grant from the Perenchio Foundation, the largest single gift in the organization’s history. Under the leadership of new president Juan Devis, Film Independent is poised to redefine its role in supporting independent storytellers and fostering a vibrant creative ecosystem in Los Angeles.
Embracing Global and Digital Storytelling
The 2027 Spirit Awards will introduce the Best International First Feature category, recognizing the narrative feature debut of international directors. This addition underscores Film Independent’s commitment to showcasing distinctive work from storytellers around the world. Additionally, the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) has been added as a qualifying festival, further enhancing the awards’ global reach.
In a nod to the digital age, the Spirit Awards will also feature a new Digital Creator Award. This category aims to honor independent storytellers who create original work for digital-first platforms. The winning digital creator will receive a $25,000 unrestricted grant, developed in partnership with Max Reisinger, CEO and co-founder of Creator Camp. This collaboration highlights the growing importance of digital storytelling in the independent film landscape.
Expanding the Creative Ecosystem
Juan Devis, the new Film Independent president, emphasizes the organization’s role as a bridge between rising filmmakers and Los Angeles’s broader creative economy. The $2.55 million grant from the Perenchio Foundation will support core operations, artist development, and public events, ensuring the organization’s long-term sustainability and impact.
The grant will be used to stabilize core operations, invest in staff and technology, and expand artist development programs. This unrestricted funding is rare for film and media arts groups, providing Film Independent with the flexibility to invest where it’s needed most. The grant also supports the organization’s efforts to grow its membership and reimagine the Spirit Awards experience.
Signature Events and Collaborations
Film Independent’s signature events, such as the Indie Spirit Awards and Live Reads at The Wallis, play a crucial role in connecting creators with audiences. These events showcase the organization’s commitment to supporting emerging filmmakers and fostering a sense of community within the independent film industry.
The Indie Spirit Awards ceremony will be reimagined under new leadership in 2027, with a focus on enhancing production and audience engagement. The ceremony is voted on by Film Independent’s membership base of over 8,000 people, a figure the new president aims to grow. By recruiting new members and expanding the voting base, the organization hopes to increase the awards’ visibility and impact.
Strengthening the Local Economy
The grant strengthens the ecosystem that supports independent storytellers in Los Angeles, creating room for career development and risk-taking in creative projects. By bolstering infrastructure, Film Independent can support a broader pipeline of talent and help position independent film as a more visible part of the city’s cultural economy.
The organization’s collaborations with cultural institutions, such as The Wallis, create crossover events that attract new viewers and build community. These partnerships extend Film Independent’s footprint beyond its own calendar, fostering a more inclusive and dynamic creative ecosystem.
Looking Ahead
As the 2027 Spirit Awards approach, Film Independent is poised to celebrate the resilience, creativity, and independent spirit of Los Angeles and its community. With new categories, expanded international recognition, and a renewed commitment to supporting independent storytellers, the awards are set to honor the bold and original voices that define the independent film landscape.
