Strange New Worlds renewed for six-episode fifth season to resolve La’an’s fate

A six‑episode finale season promises to settle lingering mysteries and give La'an Noonien‑Singh a proper send‑off.

Strange New Worlds renewed for six-episode fifth season to resolve La'an’s fate

When the two-hour finale “Tomorrow’s Enterprise” aired as the closing chapter of season 4, many viewers wondered whether the series was about to end. At the time, Paramount+ was negotiating a potential wrap-up film, but negotiations shifted and the network instead committed to a shortened, six-episode fifth season. This surprise renewal gives showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers a chance to answer the most pressing questions left hanging over the crew of the USS Enterprise.

The most conspicuous unresolved thread concerned Lieutenant La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong). In the season-4 finale, a future-version of Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) asks Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) about La’an’s whereabouts, prompting an evasive reaction from Kirk. Both Goldsman and Myers admitted they had not decided her fate when they wrote the episode. “I will say straight up that at the time we wrote that, we weren’t certain of what it would be,” Myers told TV Line, while Goldsman promised, “we will locate everybody, both canon and non-canon characters. You won’t have to wonder.”

Renewal negotiations and the new episode order

During the uncertain months following season 4, Paramount+ initially floated the idea of a two-hour movie to provide closure. Goldsman leveraged those talks into a request for a full fifth season, ultimately securing a six-episode order that wrapped filming in December 2025. The shortened format contrasts with the ten-episode standard of the earlier seasons, but it aligns with the network’s desire to deliver a concise, impactful send-off.

Although an exact premiere date has not been announced, the production timeline suggests a 2027 release, most likely in the summer window when previous seasons debuted in June or July. Industry observers anticipate a weekly rollout, mirroring the approach of seasons 2 and 4, and expect the finale to run longer than the usual hour-long slot to accommodate final story beats.

What the final six episodes will likely address

The abbreviated arc will have to resolve several high-stakes plotlines. First and foremost is La’an’s destiny. With Chong confirmed for all six episodes, fans can expect a narrative that either gives her a canonical exit or finds a creative way for her to continue beyond the series, rather than a “throwaway” resolution. The episode where Uhura travels forward in time also set up a potential handoff from Captain Pike (Anson Mount) to Kirk positioning the latter as captain of the Enterprise one year before his debut in the original 1966 series.

Other characters introduced for the prequel era will also need closure. Lieutenant Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia) and Commander Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) lack the “plot armor” of legacy characters, so their fates may be decided in these final outings. Meanwhile, returning veterans such as Thomas Jane as Dr. Bones, Kai Murakami as Hikaru Sulu, and James Frain reprising Sarek are slated for cameo appearances, reinforcing the bridge to the classic series.

Finally, the writers have signaled a focus on tying loose ends rather than injecting new gimmicks. With only six installments, the show is expected to prioritize the handover of command, the resolution of La’an’s storyline, and brief nods to the broader Star Trek canon, delivering a satisfying conclusion for both long-time fans and newcomers.
