The Lee Strasberg Film Festival is gearing up for its 10th edition, and this year, it’s headed by none other than Al Pacino. The acclaimed actor, who studied under the legendary method acting coach Lee Strasberg, will lead a jury of esteemed actors and filmmakers. The festival, set to take place from November 13-15 at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute in Los Angeles, promises to be a celebration of independent cinema.
The jury, alongside Pacino, includes a mix of talented individuals such as Henri EsteveHayley OrrantiaWade Allain-MarcusHyejin ‘Grace’ Park and Brittany Alexia Young. This diverse panel reflects the festival’s commitment to fostering a collaborative creative community, a vision shared by the Strasberg family.
The Vision Behind the Festival
David Lee Strasberg the festival director, shared his family’s vision for the event. ‘My mom and dad [Lee and Anna Strasberg] believed that bringing artists together into a collaborative creative community was extremely important,’ he said. This year’s jury embodies that vision, featuring icons like Pacino who have supported the community, alongside talented alumni actors and bold independent filmmakers.
Awards and Categories
The festival will recognize a variety of categories, including Best Short Film and Best Screenplay as well as several acting honors. The awards ceremony will take place at the Marilyn Monroe Theatre adding a touch of glamour to the event. Submissions for the festival are now open, inviting filmmakers from around the world to participate.
Vashon Island Film Festival: A Showcase of Independent Cinema
In other festival news, the Vashon Island Film Festival has announced its lineup for its fifth annual event. Running from August 13-16 at the Vashon Theatre the festival will feature eight features and 17 shorts from the current festival circuit. The lineup includes a mix of narrative and documentary films, as well as special presentations and local spotlights.
The feature competition will showcase five narrative and three documentary films, including works by Rich Newey and Annika MarksMickey Keating and Myrsini Aristidou among others. The narrative shorts in competition include films by Ilke PaddenburgAnna Baumgarten and Pranav Bhasin. The documentary shorts will feature works by Arielle KnightTaliesin Black-Brown and Livia Albeck-Ripka and Víctor Tadashi Suárez.
The festival will also screen three special presentations, including Matt Johnson’s narrative feature ‘Tony,’ Ben McKenzie’s documentary feature ‘Everyone is Lying to You for Money,’ and the first episode of Chris Smith’s documentary series ‘Bring Me the Beauties: A Model Cult.’ Additionally, three feature and four short Local Spotlights will be presented, highlighting the work of local filmmakers.
The local shorts competition, shortCUTZ in partnership with C’Mon Barber will screen films shot entirely on Vashon Island or by present and former residents. Submissions for this competition are open until Friday, July 24 with official selections competing for the Mickey’s Chair Award chosen by the audience.
