The creator of the Netflix romantic-comedy Nobody Wants This has signaled that she would gladly continue the tale if the streaming giant orders another batch of episodes. Erin Foster told Parade that, after the debut of season three, she still feels there are narrative avenues left unexplored, especially for characters navigating adulthood beyond their twenties.
Foster emphasized that her personal experience of marrying at 37 gave her fresh material to inject into the series. “There’s those next steps as people who are not in their 20s, getting married and you’re starting off already kind of behind everyone else,” she explained, noting that this perspective could shape the next chapter.
Potential fourth season and a flexible mindset
While the creator admits to having a reservoir of ideas, she also cautions against becoming overly attached to a renewal. “I’m someone who doesn’t get too attached to the outcome and is sort of fluid about allowing the market to tell us what they want,” Foster said on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast. She added that a series should only persist as long as audiences remain eager for more, preferring a scenario where viewers clamor for additional episodes rather than the opposite.
By framing the decision as a market-driven one, Foster signals that any future season would be shaped by subscriber demand, critical response, and the cultural relevance of the storylines.
Addressing Adam Brody’s “Free Palestine” comments
A recent flashpoint involved star Adam Brody, who expressed support for a “Free Palestine” stance in a GQ interview. The remarks sparked debate among the show’s pro-Israel fan base. Foster, while acknowledging her disagreement with Brody, defended his right to a differing viewpoint. “While I love Adam, I also disagree with him. And that’s okay,” she remarked.
Foster also reassured Jewish viewers that the series remains a heartfelt tribute to Judaism. She highlighted her own conversion journey and the scarcity of positive Jewish representation in contemporary media, positioning the show as a “love letter to Judaism” at a time when such narratives are especially needed.
Show premise, inspiration, and accolades
Nobody Wants This follows agnostic podcaster Joanne Williams, portrayed by Kristen Bell, as she embarks on an unlikely romance with Rabbi Noah Roklov, played by Adam Brody. Inspired by Foster’s own marriage to music-industry executive Simon Tikhman, the series explores cultural immersion, interfaith dialogue, and the challenges of conversion. Joanne’s decision to adopt Jewish customs and eventually convert forms the emotional core of the story.
The series has earned critical recognition, boasting six Golden Globe nominations, and has sparked conversations about representation, religious identity, and modern relationships. Its third season is already available for streaming, and Foster herself makes a cameo appearance.
As the conversation surrounding the show evolves, the ultimate fate of a fourth season hangs on Netflix’s strategic calculations and audience appetite. Until a formal renewal is announced, Foster remains poised to continue the narrative should the opportunity arise.
