Exploring Climate Change Through Cinema: SEI Asia at CCCL Film Festival 2026

The Changing Climate, Changing Lives (CCCL) Film Festival is back for its 2026 edition, running from 12 to 21 June in various venues across Bangkok. This year, SEI Asia is proud to participate, bringing a selection of thought-provoking short films that explore the urgent issue of climate change through personal and artistic lenses.

The Global Shorts Program 3scheduled for 17 Junefeatures five films from Asia, Europe, and the UK. Each film delves into the climate crisis in a unique way, offering viewers a diverse range of perspectives. Following the screening, Rajesh Daniel from SEI will moderate a question-and-answer session with Alejandro Cavitea community leader from the Philippines.

Highlighted Short Films

The program includes a variety of films that tackle different aspects of the climate crisis. Here are the featured shorts:

3 MWh

3 MWhdirected by Marie-Magdalena Kochová from the Czech Republicis a 12-minute film poem that follows a nuclear power plant worker obsessed with counting. The worker has set a limit on his electricity consumption, forcing him to make difficult decisions as his energy supply dwindles. This film explores the concept of degrowth and challenges the notion of humans as the center of nature.

Pacific Vein (2026)

Ulu Braun‘s Pacific Veina 12-minute film from Germanytakes viewers on an endless tracking shot through a picturesque US panorama. The film blends the American Dream with ghostly auto-suggestion, featuring ponderings from Assange and Bezos about life.

My Plastic Mother (2026)

In My Plastic Motherdirected by Amar Haikal from IndonesiaEki searches for a memento to honor his late mother amidst a landfill. Battling relentless rain, landslides, and threats from scavengers and machinery, Eki fears his mother’s memory will be lost beneath the waste. This 15-minute film highlights the environmental impact of waste and the personal struggles it engenders.

In Our Island / Sa Among Isla

Ditsi Carolino‘s In Our Island / Sa Among Isla is an 18-minute documentary set on a small island in Bohol, Philippines. The film portrays a community dependent on the sea, now facing rising sea levels, dwindling resources, and increasingly destructive typhoons. Through the stories of fishermen and mothers, the documentary explores the struggle between staying rooted in their homeland and the difficult decision of whether to leave.

True Love & Wormholes

True Love & Wormholesdirected by Annabel Vine from the United Kingdomis a 15-minute film that follows Maggie, from the West Country, and Craig, from the future. Together, they might just save the planet. As their bond deepens, Maggie suspects Craig’s story hides something darker, leading to a thrilling exploration of reality, delusion, and true love.

The CCCL Film Festival is a platform for Thai youth and communities to share their stories of climate impact, resilience, inspiration, and innovation. Founded in 2019the festival aims to raise awareness about climate change through the power of short films and inspire action in Thailand and Southeast Asia.
