The Star Trek franchise has evolved significantly since its inception in 1966each new series bringing a fresh perspective while maintaining the core spirit of the original. Star Trek: Starfleet Academythe latest addition to this storied universe, faces the unique challenge of introducing a new generation of cadets while honoring the legacy of the Federation.
At the heart of this visual journey is cinematographer Tommy Maddox-Upshawwho shared his creative process with IndieWire during their recent Craft Roundtables. Maddox-Upshaw’s goal was to create a warm, inviting atmosphere for these young cadets, setting the stage for their growth and camaraderie.
Crafting a Distinct Visual Identity
Maddox-Upshaw aimed to differentiate Starfleet Academy from the broader Star Trek universe, particularly in its visual style. He sought to move away from the typical anamorphic, clean, cold look that dominates much of sci-fi cinematography. Instead, he opted for a more intimate and warm approach, reflecting the close-knit environment of the academy.
“I was trying to figure out a different format because everybody, in this sci-fi space especially, is anamorphic, clean, cold, long lens, reach on a 300m. I was like, ‘No, these are kids, and they need to be learning about camaraderie,” Maddox-Upshaw explained. This shift in perspective allows the cadets to feel more connected to each other and their environment, fostering a sense of belonging.
Balancing Warmth and Adventure
The visual palette of Starfleet Academy evolves as the cadets progress through their training. Initially, the cinematography is warm and intimate, reflecting the nurturing environment of the academy. However, as the cadets embark on missions, the palette shifts to cooler tones, symbolizing their transition into the broader, more challenging galaxy.
“The palette went warmer. And then when they went on the missions, you’ll see that I kind of cool it off and mixed color and tonality,” Maddox-Upshaw noted. This subtle change in color and tonality serves as a visual metaphor for the cadets’ journey from the safety of the academy to the vast, unpredictable expanse of space.
