The Hong Kong international film Festival Society has announced a significant leadership change, appointing Fred Tsui as its new executive director. Tsui, who currently serves as the founder and CEO of Moebius Entertainment, will assume his new role on September 23, reporting to HKIFFS chair Dr. Wilfred Wong and the board.
Tsui brings over three decades of experience in the film industry to his new position. His extensive background spans distribution, financing, broadcasting, exhibition, and media operations, with a particular focus on international sales and co-production. This diverse expertise has connected him with key players across Asia, Europe, and North America.
The Vision for HKIFFS
In his new role, Tsui will oversee a range of initiatives, including the flagship Hong Kong International Film Festival, the Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) and its HAF Film Lab, the Summer International Film Festival, and the HKIFF Cine Fan strand. His appointment comes at a pivotal time for the society, as it continues to foster film as art and culture.
Tsui’s vision for HKIFFS includes broadening its international reach, nurturing new talent, and deepening audience engagement. He aims to ensure that Hong Kong remains at the forefront of global film culture. “It is a tremendous honor to join HKIFFS, an institution that has played such a pivotal role in the cultural life of Hong Kong and in promoting Asian cinema internationally,” Tsui said.
A Career Spanning Decades
Before founding Moebius Entertainment, Tsui spent over two decades at Media Asia Film, eventually becoming the general manager of its international sales and co-production division. In this role, he played a crucial part in extending one of Hong Kong’s major studios onto the world stage. Earlier in his career, Tsui held senior roles at PCCW and Asia Television, gaining valuable experience in organizational leadership and media operations.
Tsui is also known for his contributions as a film critic and has served on juries at numerous international film festivals, including those in Hong Kong, Edinburgh, Jecheon, Tallinn, Seattle, Udine, Sitges, Sonoma, and Skip City in Japan. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) and the Hong Kong Film Critics Society. His extensive industry involvement includes past roles on the boards of the Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA) in the U.S. and the MIA International Audiovisual Market in Rome.
Recent Achievements at Moebius Entertainment
Under Tsui’s leadership, Moebius Entertainment has become a respected international sales agency for celebrated Asian titles. The company has crafted global sales strategies, secured distribution deals across major territories, and steered festival campaigns for award-winning films. Recently, Moebius boarded worldwide sales for Michelle Zhou’s debut feature “Big Little Things,” selected for the Horizons section of the Venice Film Festival, and picked up sales rights outside Taiwan to Fiona Roan Feng-i’s “Happily Ever After,” set to premiere in the Toronto Film Festival’s Special Presentations section.
