The iconic band New Order has announced significant changes to their lineup for upcoming performances. Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert both founding members, will not be joining the band’s show at the Primavera festival in Santiago, Chile scheduled for November 26-28.
In an Instagram post the band revealed that the decision is due to personal health reasons. This leaves Bernard Sumner as the only original member who will perform alongside Phil Cunningham and Tom Chapman who have been with the band since its reformation in 2011.
New Order’s Upcoming Performances and Lineup Changes
The announcement comes as New Order prepares for their first performance in Chile in seven years. The band expressed their excitement about the upcoming show, stating, “New Order are very happy to be playing Primavera in Chile in November.”
However, the absence of Morris and Gilbert marks a significant shift for the band. The statement from New Order reads, “Due to personal health reasons, Stephen and Gillian won’t be touring for the foreseeable future and will not be joining for this show. Bernard, Phil and Tom are really sorry that Stephen and Gillian can’t join us this time, but unfortunately the circumstances make it impossible.“
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction
In addition to their performance in Chile, New Order is set to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on November 14 in Los Angeles. The induction will honor both Joy Division and New Order marking a significant milestone for the band.
However, the induction ceremony has been overshadowed by tensions within the band. Peter Hook the original bassist for both Joy Division and New Order, has announced his attendance but has made it clear he will not stand with his former bandmates. In a statement to Rolling Stone Hook said, “No. No. Not after what they did to me and my family, no. No. I won’t stand with them.“
Hook, who left the band in 2007 has been performing with his own band, The Light and is currently on a U.S. tour. He expressed a preference for performing with Oasis another band being inducted, stating, “Definitely. Without a shadow of a doubt, for that first gig I gave them in 1990. Do you know what? All I can say is that plans from my side are underway. I’m hoping they come to fruition.“
The Future of New Order
The recent lineup changes and the upcoming induction ceremony highlight the complex dynamics within New Order. As the band continues to evolve, fans and industry professionals alike will be watching closely to see how these developments unfold.
For now, the focus remains on the upcoming performances and the historic induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The band’s ability to adapt and continue creating music despite internal challenges is a testament to their enduring legacy in the world of post-punk and alternative music.
