The FX drama The Lowdown has rolled out its second-season trailer, and the footage promises that citizen journalist Lee Raybon (ethan hawke) is about to tumble deeper into Tulsa’s darkest corners. While the opening glimpse hints at a brief respite for Lee, the narrative quickly spirals into a full-blown investigation that implicates the entire sheriff’s department and two confirmed homicides. The trailer’s narrator sets the tone: a conspiracy that “goes all the way to the top,” and Lee vows to expose it before the truth is silenced.
Plot twists and fresh alliances
In the new arc, Lee, who runs a rare-books shop that doubles as a community hub, is recruited by the fierce public defender Ginger (Betty Gilpin). Ginger arrives with a perplexing case: a client’s mysterious disappearance from a state penitentiary. As Lee dives into the paperwork, he discovers a web of corruption that links two murders to the highest echelons of the sheriff’s office. Meanwhile, his personal life unravels. His estranged father, Lee Raybon Sr., makes a dramatic entrance wearing a red baseball cap emblazoned with a reference to Psalm 107:29 – “He calms the storm, so that its waves are still.” Tommy Lee Jones, in his first major TV role in years, portrays the conflicted patriarch whose sudden appearance threatens to sabotage Lee’s investigation.
The partnership between Lee and Ginger injects fresh energy into the series. Ginger, known for her brash courtroom style, becomes both a catalyst and a foil for Lee’s unfiltered journalistic instincts. Their collaboration pulls Lee away from his teenage daughter, Francis (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), and the co-parenting routine he shares with ex-partner Samantha (Kaniehtiio Horn). The trailer hints at tense family moments, a frantic award ceremony where Lee’s recent expose earns him a citizen-journalist honor, and his subsequent self-medication that fuels his reckless pursuit of the truth.
Returning cast, Easter eggs and production notes
Season 2 retains a strong ensemble: Kaniehtiio Horn, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Killer Mike, Michael Hitchcock, Macon Blair, Siena East, Cody Lightning and Jude Barnett all reprise their roles. Guest star Martha Plimpton appears, while Kyle MacLachlan makes a brief cameo that fans of the first season will recognize. FX also promises “a number of familiar faces” from Sterlin Harjo’s acclaimed series Reservation Dogs including a fleeting appearance by Paulina Alexis, who played Willie Jack in season 1.
Behind the camera, Harjo serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Ethan Hawke, Garrett Basch, Ryan Hawke, Duffy Boudreau and Scott Teems. The series continues to be produced by FX Productions, which has championed the show’s gritty, off-beat tone from the start. Critical reception remains stellar, with a near-perfect 98 % score on Rotten Tomatoes and a solid audience rating in the high 70s.
The second season will debut with a double-episode launch on October 14 at 9 p.m. ET on FX, with the same timeslot continuing for the remaining six episodes each Wednesday. Hulu will stream the episodes the following day, giving both broadcast and streaming audiences immediate access. The promotional push underscores the series’ blend of noir-style crime drama, sharp humor and social commentary, positioning it as a must-watch event for the fall television slate.
