The ocean’s most dazzling resident is about to make a splash on the big screen. Studiocanal Germany, in collaboration with Claussen + Putz Filmproduktion and Zodiac Pictures, is producing an animated adaptation of Marcus Pfister’s modern classicThe Rainbow Fish. This project continues a fruitful partnership that has previously brought The Robber HotzenplotzThe Little Witch and Heidi to audiences.

First published in 1992 Pfister’s tale of a vain, glittering fish who learns the value of sharing has captivated readers worldwide, with over 30 million copies sold. However, the story has not been without controversy, sparking debates in the U.S. about its underlying messages on individuality, acceptance, and boundaries.

The Rainbow Fish’s Journey to the Big Screen

The film follows the story of the Rainbow Fish whose shimmering scales make him the most beautiful fish in the ocean. His vanity and pride, however, lead to loneliness. When he loses one of his beloved scales, he embarks on an adventurous journey with the Little Blue Fish learning that true friendship is more precious than the most magnificent coat of scales.

Studiocanal Germany co-heads Hooman Afshari and Lutz Rippe expressed their enthusiasm for the project, stating, The Rainbow Fish carries a universal message that is understood and loved all over the world. It is a great joy for us to reinterpret this special story together with our partners as a major cinematic experience for audiences of all ages.

A Unique Approach to Animation

Bringing this underwater world to life is Florian Moch a veteran puppeteer from Germany’s 80-year-old Augsburg Puppet Theatre. Moch, who has crafted most of the puppets himself, is directing the film based on his own screenplay. This unique approach to animation promises a contemporary, handcrafted feel that is both nostalgic and innovative.

Being able to create a contemporary, handcrafted puppet film with The Rainbow Fish is something very special—and a childhood dream come true for me Moch shared, highlighting the personal significance of the project.

A Star-Studded Cast

The German voices of the beloved sea creatures are being brought to life by a high-profile ensemble. This includes actors Jannik Schümann and Luna Wedler TV host Tobi Krell actor Bjarne Mädel comedian Oliver Kalkofe musician Bela B.
