Viaplay is set to unveil Seasons 2 and 3 of Veronika, enhancing its global appeal with a boxset offering.
In an exciting development, Viaplay Content Distribution has officially announced its commitment to distribute Seasons 2 and 3 of the acclaimed Nordic noir series Veronika. This decision marks a significant step for the series, which has already garnered attention across various international markets. Previously, Viaplay was involved with the first season, but the confirmation of the subsequent seasons comes just in time for the London TV Screenings, where Viaplay will showcase a range of new titles.
The series stars Alexandra Rapaport, known for her role in Gåsmamman, portraying the complex and often troubled police officer Veronika Gren. Her unique investigative skills serve as both a blessing and a curse, pulling her into intricate cases that unveil long-hidden secrets. Alongside Rapaport, Tobias Santelmann, recognized for his performances in Exit and Detective Hole, adds depth to the narrative, supported by the production expertise of Bigster.
Following the successful run of Season 1, which achieved licensing across 55 markets, the anticipation for the upcoming seasons is palpable. Both Seasons 2 and 3 are slated to premiere on SkyShowtime in 20 European regions, and Viaplay aims to present all three seasons as a comprehensive boxset. This strategic move is designed to attract buyers looking for compelling, multi-season narratives.
According to Vanda Rapti, the Executive Vice President of Viaplay Select & Content Distribution, Veronika exemplifies modern Nordic noir, characterized by its emotional richness and complex character development. The acclaim received by the first season on platforms such as SkyShowtime and Viaplay’s streaming services in the U.S. and UK underscores the series’ appeal. With the upcoming seasons, the stakes are raised significantly, promising audiences even more tension and character exploration.
Created and penned by the talented duo of Katja Juras and Anna Ströman, and directed by Mikael Håfström, known for Evil and Derailed, Veronika has been meticulously crafted to resonate with its viewers. The production team, which includes Calle Jansson and Mathias Gruffman, ensures that the series maintains its high quality, with Rapaport also taking on executive producer duties. Returning cast members include Arvin Kananian, Eddie Eriksson Dominguez, and Sarah Rhodin, while new talents Gustav Hammarsten and Hanna Alström will enrich Season 2.
In addition to the success of Veronika, Viaplay is also expanding its portfolio with the production of a new crime drama titled National Homicide Unit. Filming has begun in the scenic coastal city of Helsingborg, featuring a star-studded cast including Pernilla August and Jonas Karlsson. This series aims to capture the essence of real-life investigations conducted by Sweden’s national homicide unit, Riksmord.
This eight-part series follows an elite team of homicide investigators as they tackle some of the most intricate murder cases across Sweden, drawing inspiration from actual events. Each case is set over two episodes, filmed in various locations that showcase the diverse landscapes of Sweden, from coastal regions to dense forests. This approach not only enhances the narrative but also immerses the audience in the stark contrasts of Swedish society.
As Kai Finke, Chief Content Officer at SkyShowtime, notes, the series promises to blend gripping suspense with authentic police procedural elements. The collaboration between local creatives and platforms aims to deliver storytelling that resonates deeply with audiences while maintaining a credible portrayal of crime-solving methods.
With Veronika and the upcoming National Homicide Unit, Viaplay is positioning itself as a key player in the international crime drama landscape, committed to delivering compelling and original content that captivates viewers across the globe.
