The Toronto International Film Festival Kicks Off with Inspiring Premieres
The 51st edition of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is set to open with Siân Heder’s Being Heumann a fact-based Apple Original feature that serves as a follow-up to her Oscar-winning film CODA. The world premiere will take place on Thursday, September 10 at Roy Thomson Hall. Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF, expressed enthusiasm for the opening selection, highlighting the inspiring story of Judy Heumann, a world-changing advocate for accessibility, brought to life by Ruth Madeley’s electric performance.
In addition to the opening night film, TIFF has announced other notable additions to its Gala Presentations program. These include Prima Facie starring Cynthia Erivo and directed by Susanna White, and The Assassin(s) by Korean filmmaker Hur Jin-ho. The festival, running from September 10–20 will also feature the popular People’s Choice Awards, presented by Rogers, and introduce a new qualification pathway for the Academy Awards. The TIFF Tribute Awards gala fundraiser and the inaugural TIFF: The Market are also highlights of this year’s event.
Thessaloniki Film Festival Offers a Unique Cinema Experience
The Thessaloniki International Film Festival is bringing back its magical Cinema with a View series, offering a unique open-air cinema experience with breathtaking views of the Thermakos Bay. This year’s lineup includes a mix of critically acclaimed and award-winning films, such as Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just an Accident Kirk Jones’ I Swear and Maryam Touzani’s Calle Málaga. The screenings will take place on August 24–September 23 providing a perfect summer night-out destination for cinephiles.
The festival’s program also features Paolo Sorrentino’s La Grazia which earned Toni Servillo the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival. With tickets priced at 6€ for general admission and 5€ for discounted rates, the event promises an affordable and enchanting cinematic experience under the stars.
Fantasia Film Festival Celebrates 30 Years with a Genre-Bending Lineup
The Fantasia International Film Festival is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a program that includes 125 features and over 200 shorts. The festival, taking place from July 16 to August 2 will feature world premieres, workshops, masterclasses, and special events. Nicolas Winding Refn will open the festival with his film Her Private Hell and receive a lifetime achievement award. Other notable guests include animation genius Don Hertzfeldt and Canadian legend Bruce McDonald.
Fantasia 2026 will also host the grand finale of Apple TV’s Cape Fear series, featuring a special screening with showrunner Nick Acosta and a special guest in attendance.
