The American Black film festival (ABFF) is embarking on a new chapter, setting its sights on Los Angeles for the 31st edition, taking place from May 20-23, 2027. This milestone event will span various iconic venues across the city, fostering a vibrant hub for Black storytelling and industry collaboration.

Jeff Friday, founder of ABFF and CEO of NICE CROWD emphasized the festival’s commitment to nurturing new voices. “For over three decades, ABFF has been driven by the belief that access can transform careers and that amplifying diverse voices enriches our entire industry,” he stated. “As we step into this new chapter, our mission is to continue pushing boundaries, creating opportunities, and empowering the next generation of storytellers.”

The Festival’s New Home

ABFF 2027 will unfold across several key locations in Los Angeles. AMC The Grove will host film screenings, while the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will be the stage for marquee events. The SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills will serve as the epicenter for industry programming, offering conversations, masterclasses, and professional development sessions. Additionally, the Original Farmers Market will feature activations and community experiences, creating a dynamic festival atmosphere.

To ensure seamless navigation, complimentary daytime shuttle services will connect all festival venues, making it easy for attendees to immerse themselves in the diverse offerings.

Innovative Programming and New Initiatives

The 31st edition of ABFF introduces several exciting new programming initiatives. ABFF First Look: The Studio Showcase will provide a platform for studios, independent filmmakers, and streamers to present upcoming projects through exclusive footage, special announcements, and appearances by filmmakers and talent.

ABFF Sports a festival within the festival, will delve into the intersection of sports, storytelling, entertainment, media, business, and culture. This section will feature screenings, conversations, and special presentations with athletes, filmmakers, and sports executives, highlighting the unique narratives that emerge from the world of sports.

Another notable addition is Crossroads a non-competitive film section that welcomes filmmakers of all backgrounds. This section will showcase narrative and documentary features that explore the intersections of culture, identity, and community, offering fresh perspectives and meaningful opportunities for connection.

Submissions and Awards

Submissions for ABFF 2027 are now open across various competitive and non-competitive sections. These include U.S. Narrative FeatureInternational Narrative FeatureDocumentary FeatureEpisodic Series and Voices of Culture. Each section aims to discover and elevate distinctive voices and compelling storytelling.

The HBO® Short Film Award now in its 30th year, remains a cornerstone of ABFF’s commitment to emerging filmmakers. As an Academy Award-qualifying award, the winner of this prestigious honor will be eligible for consideration in the Live Action Short Film category of the 100th Academy Awards®, subject to all Academy rules and requirements. Submissions for the HBO® Short Film Award will open at a later date, with additional details to be announced.
