The Nashville film festival turned into a family showcase on September 26 when Reese Witherspoon arrived with both of her children and her mother. The event marked the world premiere of Deacon Phillippe’s first feature, the dystopian drama Brother Save Us and offered a fleeting glimpse of a Hollywood lineage gathered under one marquee. While the festival spotlighted the indie sci-fi thriller, the red-carpet buzz centered on how closely the siblings mirrored their famous parents, prompting photographers to linger on the quartet.

Reese chose a sleek, strapless white blouse paired with tailored black trousers, a look that balanced elegance with comfort while she navigated the flashing lights. Her 78-year-old mother, Betty Reese, added a splash of colour in a black ensemble accented by a multicoloured scarf, proving that style runs in the family. Ava Phillippe, 27, mirrored her mother’s signature blonde waves and wore a sleeveless striped mini dress in soft neutrals, her bright smile reinforcing the mother-daughter resemblance. Deacon, 22, opted for a tonal brown suit over a chocolate-hued tee, a nod to his father Ryan Phillippe’s classic fair-skinned look. The four stood shoulder-to-shoulder, their coordinated outfits highlighting both individuality and shared heritage.

At the centre of the evening’s excitement was Deacon’s debut as a lead in Brother Save Us a bleak yet hopeful tale set on a struggling Midwestern farm where an AI-controlled robot threatens to replace human labor. In the film, Deacon portrays Cole, a brother trying to protect his sibling (played by Thomas Murphy Molony) from a corporate mega-farm that has introduced the robotic harvesters. The storyline resonates with Deacon’s own artistic pursuits: he co-wrote and performed the movie’s end-credits song, a piece recorded at New York University’s Clive Davis Institute where he recently graduated.

Before this milestone, Deacon’s on-screen résumé consisted of two episodes of Netflix’s teen series Never Have I Ever and a flashback role in Prime Video’s motor-culture drama Motorheads. In a recent interview, he stressed that his academic training was a deliberate counterweight to any perceived nepotism, noting, “I’m extremely lucky, but I hold myself to a high standard and work as hard as I can.” The young actor also hinted at future projects, including a supporting role in the rom-com Better Than the Movies a genre his mother has mastered.

Behind the scenes: the Witherspoon-Phillippe family history

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe first met in 1997, married in 1999, and welcomed Ava that same year. Their second child, Deacon, arrived in 2003. The couple announced their separation in 2006 and finalized their divorce in 2008, yet they have continued to co-parent their two offspring. Reese later married talent agent Jim Toth in 2011, giving birth to a third child, Tennessee, in 2012; the couple’s divorce was revealed in 2023. Ryan also has a teenage daughter, Kai, from a prior relationship with actress Alexis Knapp.

Ava has largely stayed out of the limelight, dabbling in modeling and frequently accompanying her mother to high-profile events, while Deacon is carving his own path through acting and music. Their grandmother, Betty Reese, remains an anchor for the family, attending events and offering a generational bridge. Together, the family’s appearance at the Nashville premiere underscored both personal milestones and the enduring influence of Hollywood legacies.
