Revised 40th-Anniversary Judge Dredd Game Launches with Fresh Art

Judge Dredd has ruled Mega-City One for almost five decades, and his legacy now extends onto the tabletop once more. To mark the 40th anniversary of the original 1982 release, Rebellion Unplugged has issued a modernized edition that keeps the core premise while streamlining gameplay and adding fresh visual flair.

The 1982 version, titled Judge Dredd: The Game of Crime-Fighting in Mega-City One was designed by Sir Ian Livingstone, co-founder of Games Workshop and creator of the Fighting Fantasy series. Players assumed the role of Judges patrolling the sprawling dystopia, confronting notorious foes such as Judge Death, Orlok the Assassin, and the Angel Gang. Action cards let participants boost their own chances or sabotage rivals, creating a competitive blend of law-enforcement and intrigue.

What the anniversary edition changes

The new package preserves the original’s premise – two to six players chasing down perps and vying for the title of most effective enforcer – but introduces several key updates. The rulebook has been trimmed and clarified, reducing average playtime to roughly 90 minutes and making the experience more accessible for newcomers. Artwork by legendary 2000 AD illustrators Brian Bolland and Ian Gibson has been fully recolored, giving the cards a crisp, contemporary look while retaining the classic comic-book aesthetic.

Specialist Judges expansion adds depth

The headline feature of the anniversary release is the Specialist Judges expansion. Six distinct Judge archetypes now join the roster:

  • Mechanismo droid – a cybernetic enforcer with tech-based abilities.
  • Psi Judge – a mind-reader capable of anticipating opponent moves.
  • Chief Judge – a leader who can issue directives that affect all players.
  • Cadet – a novice whose growth mechanics reward aggressive play.
  • Special Judicial Squad Judge – a specialist in high-risk operations.
  • Wally Squad Judge – an undercover operative with stealth options.

Each specialist brings unique powers that reshape tactics, ensuring that no two sessions feel alike. This addition turns a nostalgic reprint into a substantive new entry for seasoned fans and those discovering the universe for the first time.

Where to buy and what it costs

Retail availability is currently fragmented. Forbidden Planet lists the game at £35 but marks it as out of stock, offering a restock notification option. Leisure Games shows the same £35 price and indicates availability, while Rebellion’s own storefront also lists the title at £35 but flags it as sold out. Prospective buyers should monitor these retailers for updates, as the demand among collectors and tabletop enthusiasts is expected to drive quick turn-overs.

By weaving classic villains, refreshed visuals, and a versatile Specialist Judges expansion into a tighter rule set, it offers a compelling reason for both long-time Dredd devotees and newcomers to step into the boots of the law. Whether you’re a veteran of the 1982 tables or a fresh recruit, the game promises a fast-paced, immersive dive into the chaotic streets of Mega-City One.
